How to build 3 phase converters
Please note that EPO and Ace Electronics are local surplus electronics suppliers in Houston, hopefully you will have such a supplier on your area. This is a Motor-Start capacitor, these are designed for use with alternating current AC.
The capacitor should be chosen for about 70 to uF per horsepower. A larger capacitor can give more starting torque, but may prevent the potential relay from operating properly. Be sure the capacitor is rated for at least VAC. The relay is a Potential Relay. The Grainger part 6X is recommended. Other values can be used, but it may be necessary to disassemble the relay and adjust it.
Potential relays can be found in discarded air-conditioner units. The resistor is 15, ohms and rated for 2 Watts. If the resistor is not used, the relay will chatter when the power is disconnected.
The value of the resistor can range anywhere between 10, and 20, ohms, just be sure it is rated for at least 2 Watts. In the top drawing, the potential relay uses AC Neutral as a reference. This is handy if the AC Neutral is not available. Any small transformer will work. EPO or Ace Electronics would probably have these. The voltage on the secondary is not important since it is not used.
Choose an Idle Motor that is at least as big HP as the largest motor in your system. This would generally mean 3 to 5HP for the home shop. Cutting the shaft off flush with the cover can help prevent accidents. The box should be wall mounted and close enough to the converter to avoid long power lines needing to be either run through walls or conduit.
The converter is a machine about the size of a gallon water cooler. All power to and from the converter is hard wired meaning no electrical sockets. The three-phase converter will come with a wiring schematic for properly connecting the black, red, blue and neutral white lines to the junction box. Again, hard wire all connections according to local building and electrical codes.
If the machine has an electrical plug, remove it and access the wires inside the power cable. There is a junction box on the converter for connecting the machine.
Access the junction, and again, use the schematic diagram to connect the machine. The reduction of 3 phase hv to 3 phase vac output is done using a transformer for each phase. My understanding is that in a delta configuration, the line voltage between any two phases is the same as the phase voltage, in this case, v.
You just wire the three elements in parallel it shows v 3 ph so if you wire it with a suitable v dp breaker it should work, that is how residential furnaces operate, although they tend to switch each bank in sequentially. The first stage intended for converting the 3 phase ac to dc may be executed simply by the traditional diode bridge. I will be checking on the cost of this. Or if each phase of the 3 phase system is vac you just connect to one phase and make sure you don't cause an imbalance.

That is an option if you only have v available. By continuing to use this site you consent to the use of cookies on your device as described in our cookie policy unless you have disabled them.
It is a quick method you can apply — but it will not be very reliable as the power produced is not accurately. That is typically not grounded. The diagram and table below can be used to convert amperage between single phase and three phase equipment and vice versa. In this video i show my setup that i use to take vac single phase household power and create both vac 3 phase and vac 3 phase power using a rotary p.
